This is a must read!!! CPR video saves a baby's life!

In the Women's Health Center, part of the discharge process for all Moms is to watch an Instructional Infant CPR video.  This is something that generally the NICU nurses will bring into the room, and help Moms get it started. For one patient in particular, watching that video was one of the best things she could have ever done.

Cassondra Guitron gave birth to her son Maxwell at Sutter Delta's WHC on May 1, 2010. She still remembers the nurse coming in and asking her and the baby's Dad to watch the CPR video. What she didn't know, was that in a few months from then, she was actually going to have to use what she learned from this video on her own son.

A couple weeks ago Cassondra was sitting at the table with Max's Father and his Grandpa having dinner. Max was in his high chair chewing on a teething biscuit. All of the sudden, Cassondra looked over and could see Max struggling with the biscuit and that he was beginning to  choke on it! Cassondra immediately got up, un did his highchair, while trying to remain calm. Max's Father got up to help but she pushed him aside, confident she knew what to do and took over. She could hear her baby wheezing as the biscuit had been lodged down his throat. Before she knew it he was slouched over in his highchair struggling to breath, all in a matter of seconds! Max's Father even had the phone out ready to call 911. Cassondra picked up her baby, knowing time was running out and she needed to save her baby boy's life! As she quickly pulled him out of his highchair she began turning him over and was hitting his back trying to get the biscuit to dislodge. As she was doing this, she said the video she had watched in The Women’s Health Center was playing in her head and she was already prepared to go to the next step of CPR if this wasn't going to work. Cassondra said she didn't even hesitate as she KNEW what to do and it was all because of the CPR video she watched during her stay in The Women's Health Center. Fortunately Cassondra did get that biscuit to come out and Maxwell was okay! Cassondra called up our department just minutes after this frightning experience  to tell us that the CPR Video we make our patients watch, saved her son's life!! She said she would have never known what to do had she not watched the video! Cassondra has told many people her story and how grateful she is that Sutter Delta makes their Mom's watch this life saving video. She recommends all Mom's know CPR. Friends of Sondra are actually trying to transfer to a Dr. that delivers at Sutter Delta because they want to deliver their babies in a Hospital that realizes how important it is to educate new parents on things such as CPR.

If you are interested in learning CPR and ordering a kit of your own, you can go to www.aap.org  It is called,  Infant CPR Anytime kit  and it is only 22 minutes long.
