February Is National Heart Disease Awareness Month! Sutter Delta wants to share these tips for a healthy heart.

    Wear-red

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 2400 Americans die everyday from Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).  These 7 simple prevention steps  can help you reduce your risk of heart disease:

    1. Lose weight – Obesity is now recognized as a major risk factor for heart disease.  Being overweight, especially around your middle, can increase your risk for health issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

    1. Eat healthy – A healthy diet and lifestyle are your best weapons to fight Cardiovascular Disease.  Choose vegetables and fruits, unrefined whole grains and fish to help increase fiber and decrease blood cholesterol.

    3.       Exercise – The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise or a combination of both.  Good for your physical and mental health.

    4.       Control your cholesterol - It is important that everyone know their blood cholesterol level.  By lowering your blood cholesterol you reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.  To keep your cholesterol under control The American Heart Association recommends that you: schedule a screening, eat foods low in cholesterol and saturated fat and free of trans fat, maintain a healthy weight, and stay physically active.

    5.       Manage your blood pressure - High blood pressure is the single most significant risk factor for heart disease.  High blood pressure is manageable.  By eating a healthy diet, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, managing your stress, limiting your alcohol and not smoking, you can reduce your blood pressure without the use of prescription medication.

    6.       Reduce your blood sugar - The American Heart Association considers diabetes one of the six major controllable risk factors for cardiovascular disease.   When diabetes is detected, a doctor may prescribe changes in eating habits, weight control, exercise programs and medication to keep it in check. It's critical for people with diabetes to have regular check-ups. Work closely with your healthcare provider to manage your diabetes and control any other risk factors.

    7.       Stop Smoking - Smoking is the most important preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Smokers have a higher risk of developing many chronic disorders, including atherosclerosis — the buildup of fatty substances in the arteries — which can lead to coronary heart disease, heart attack (myocardial infarction) and stroke.  Smoking by itself increases the risk of coronary heart disease.  Your risk of heart disease increases greatly if you smoke and have a family history of heart disease.  Sutter Delta offers free Smoking Cessation classes every Monday between 6:00  to 8:00 pm in the boardroom.  For more information or to register call 925-779-3613.
