Last Saturday night I went to the Beach Blanket Babylon performance that Delta Memorial Foundation hosted. I had planned my evening for weeks, and a group of ten of us purchased tickets. I was very much looking forward not only to the musical, but to the after party as well. When I woke up Saturday morning the wind was blowing. I live in Antioch, as those of you who live out here on the delta know, the wind often blows. But knowing that the after party was to be held outside, I was less happy than usual to see the trees being whipped about by wind. I called all my friends who had purchased tickets in support of the Foundation, and reminded them that the party would be outside. Then I began to pray, “Lord, please still the wind. You are the God of the elements, and if only you speak the word, the wind will die.” Off to the soccer fields I went with my son, and the wind blew. “Lord, I know you can do all things. The Foundation has put so much effort toward this evening, please quite the winds.” As I went about my day, I continued my silent pleas with the great I AM. That’s how God described Himself to Moses when he was told to go lead the Israelites to freedom from Pharaoh. When Moses asked who he should say had sent him, God said “I AM WHO I AM. Say to the Israelites, I AM sent you.” Exodus 3:14.
Now and again as I went about my Saturday routine, I shot my prayers up like arrows. Straight and to the point, “Lord, PLEASE stop this wind.” And the wind blew.
Skeptics may think me naïve to admit such prayers. However, those of us who know and believe I AM, have seen Him work on our behalf before. Jesus said “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31. I believe God cares about the good work the Foundation does on behalf of the uninsured and underinsured. I feel confident that He would say to them: Well Done! And if the hairs of our heads are numbered, God is definitely into details!
The show was sold out and a great success. It was a packed house, and what fun to see everyone in their suits and fancy dresses. The band at the after party was great, and people danced and milled about sipping cocktails and coffee. Who knew a party in the street could be so elegant? And the evening air was still, the wind was gone.
