Are You/We Eating Too Much Salt? ~ Tips on Using Less by Onna Lee, R.D. at Sutter Delta Medical Center

Salt is one of the minerals that is essential to our body in small quantities. Sodium chloride is the main form of salt. According to American Heart Association, we should “aim to eat less than 1,500 mg of sodium per day.” Most people in this country consume at least two times more than the recommended amount everyday. High sodium intake may increase blood pressure, and increase the risks of heart disease and stroke. Many of the foods we eat already contain sodium naturally. Canned and processed foods (e.g. soups, luncheon meats) are common hidden sources of salt that you may not be aware of eating.  If you include added salt in your diet, here is a fact you may need to know: one teaspoon of salt equals 2,300 mg of sodium. Now thinking of cutting back on salt? Below are some ideas to reduce sodium intake:

    -         Using herbs/spices when cooking instead of salt

    -         Learn to read food labels to choose low sodium foods

    -         Avoid using salt shaker

    -         Limit snacks that are high in salt (e.g. chips, nuts, pretzels)
