It’s been a while since I’ve written. For those of you who’ve missed my blogs, I apologize for my prolonged silence. For those of you who’d rather that I not write at all, again I apologize, but I’ve been asked to resume writing. I’m hosting a dinner one week from tonight to acknowledge the volunteers who donate their time to Sutter Delta’s Chaplaincy Dept. A few weeks ago I met with the caterer to discuss the menu. Since I served chicken at the last gathering of this group, I decided on beef. A few days after the invitations went out, people began to RSVP. One man asked what was on the menu because it is Lent, and our dinner is scheduled for a Friday. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Lent, it’s the period of time between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, 40 days. In the faith traditions of those who observe it,
it’s customary to deny yourself of something you enjoy during those 40 days. My 90 year old father-in-law and his friends give up wine and all alcoholic beverages. Some people give up coffee or chocolate, you get the idea. In addition, meat is avoided on Friday’s. As the observance of Lent is not part of my faith tradition, I completely forgot. I promptly changed the menu once reminded, and now we will be feasting on fish instead. What’s the point of all this you ask? Self Denial. It’s not something we’re accustomed to as Americans, at least not most of us anyway. The idea of voluntarily denying ourselves of something we enjoy is a foreign concept to many. I find it encouraging and uplifting that so many of you honor the Lent season in an effort to draw closer to God. I pray that He blesses you and your family for your sacrifices.
Blessings until we meet again,
Chaplain Denise

Flu Season Update
We are still seeing a lot of flu in our community. This season seems to be r
unning late and is still very active.
The CDC has three recommended steps to fight the flu this season:
1.
Get vaccinated
!
· Check your local Doctors office or pharmacy for flu vaccine availability and times.
· Find a Flu Shot in Contra Costa County
· http://cchealth.org/topics/flu/vaccination.php
2. Take measures everyday to prevent the flu:
· Cover your cough!
· Wash your hands often.
· Stay home if you are sick.
3. Take antiviral medication if you do get the flu if your Doctor prescribes them.
· Flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.
· It’s very important that antiviral drugs be used early (within the first 2 days of symptoms) to treat people who are very sick (such as those who are hospitalized) or people who are sick with flu symptoms and who are at increased risk of severe flu illness, such as pregnant women, young children, people 65 and older and people with certain chronic health conditions.

In an ongoing effort to support our community, Sutter Delta Medical Center partnered with the City of Antioch Recreation Department to offer two new family centered healthy classes.
Blissful Baby Massage
For Parents and babies ages Newborn to 18 months. This one hour class teaches the basic infant/baby massage. Learn the benefits of massage, baby massage strokes, how to help baby sleep better, reduce discomfort due to colic, teething, digestion and more! Both parents and baby are welcome to attend. Sutter Delta's massage therapist Christina Zanarini is teaching the 5 week course.
Itsy Bitsy Baby/Mommy Yoga
For ages 3 months to 18 months. A combination of yoga for Mom, "yoga" baby bonding between the two. The intensity of the practice will be tailored for moms of all stages of postpartum and for babies at different development levels. No experience necessary. In addition to the physical benefits, the direct contact with mom also soothes baby's nervous system while bolstering immunity, circulation and physical growth. Helping babies and their connect into the joyfulness of yoga in a special way.
Sutter Delta provided funding to help bring these popular classes to the residents of East Contra Costa County.
Both Classes start in April - so register today by calling 925-776-3050 or online at www.ci.antioch.ca.us
