Years ago I had a friend I used to pray with on a regular basis. She always began her prayers with the same thanksgiving: “Lord, thank you that I woke up this morning clothed in my right mind”. She then went on to thank God for some very basic, fundamental realities of her life. I’ve never forgotten her posture of gratitude for simple everyday blessings that I had usually taken for granted. She taught me something that has never left me. I wake up each morning sane, “clothed in my right mind.”
Some who know me may disagree, but that’s a discussion for another day. The fact remains that I get up every morning and stagger to the bathroom like most of us do. I walk on two feet because I am not bound to a wheelchair. I avoid bumping into things because I can see. I hear my alarm when it sounds and I can smell the coffee as it brews. This year is the hardest, financially, in recent years for many Americans. Many have lost not only jobs, but homes, health, security and the list goes on. This message may reach some who feel anything but thankful. Unless we’ve been similarly affected, I don’t believe we can fully appreciate what you’ve been through.
My prayer for you this Thanksgiving, especially for those who are suffering loss, is that you may find a respite from your grief. For those of us who’ve had a good year, let’s be grateful for all the little things
in life, in addition to the big things. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone.

It’s that time of year again when we begin planning holiday dinners . It can be quite expensive making the meals that we Americans, are accustomed to.
It’s common for families to go to more than one house to celebrate, and overindulging is the norm.
Some of us, who don’t dine at home on Thanksgiving, cook a turkey and all the trimmings the day after the holiday, so we can have our own leftovers.
I want to encourage those of you who are able, to buy a little extra for the purpose of donation this year. For many of you, this is an annual tradition. You may have raised your children filling bags of groceries for local food closets. Some people hold canned food drives in their offices or various places of business. It’s true that people go hungry all year long, but somehow it feels even more wrong when the rest of us are feasting.
So if you’re able, consider giving as your act of Thanksgiving this year, and may mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.

Congratulations to Volunteer of the month for October 2010: Sarah Presser
Sarah started volunteering because she wanted to do something constructive with her free time. She chose Sutter Delta because “I wanted to be actively involved in something that allowed me to help others. I was very smart to walk into Sutter Delta to ask for a volunteer application because I was immediately greeted by warm smiling faces and I knew I was in the right place. I continue to volunteer because I genuinely like being here. I have made new and wonderful friendships and I have a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes in a hospital. I am proud to be a volunteer at Sutter Delta because even in a small way, I make a difference and that makes me happy!”
